1545: Rental of the Manor of Mayfield

The Rental of Percyvall Hart Knight of his Lordship or Manor of Orpington Mayfield in the County of Kent kenned by the tenants of the same Manor which were present at the Court there holden 6 May 37 Henry VIII [1545].

Imprimis of Robert Stable for parcel of land containing by estimation half an acre called Godbetholle lying to the land of the said Robert on the South and East, to the King’s Highway leading from Scad Crosse to Crofton on the West and to the land of Jhon Beveredge on the North and payeth – a halfpenny.


Item of the same Robert Stable for 7 acres of Wood land called Hoprest sometime Robert Hoprest’s late John a Bury lying to the wood of the Lord of the Manor called Lake on the North, to land of Jhon Stable of Crofton on the South and to land of Humfrey Style Kt. on the West and to land of the said Robert Stable on the East – 14d.

Item of the same Robert Stable for 2 acres of land called Grene Croft late Jhon a Bury lying next adjoining to the land of Jhon Stable of Crofton called Shortland to the South, to the common highway there on the North and West and to land of Jhon Beverege on the East – 7d.

Item of the same Robert Stable for a house or tenement with an orchard sometime John a Bury lying next the garden of the said Lord of the Manor called Pery Garden on the South and the land of Henry Posyer gent. on the North and to the King’s Highway on the West – 8d.

Item of the same Robert Stable for a hyll called Gyrdlars hyll sometime John a Bury lying with the lands of the said lord of Orpington – 4d., one hen and 10 eggs.

Item of the same Robert Stable for a messuage or Tenement and a Garden late William Hoth [?] of Bromley lying to the King’s High Way leading to London on the North and East and to the lands of the Manor called Vycars Croft on the West – 18d., 2 hens, 20 eggs, suit to Court.

Item of Thomas Huntman for Grene Croft called Huntmans Spryng [to lands] of the said Robert Stable on the North and to an old Land Way on the South – 6d., 1 hen and 10 eggs. [a note in the margin reads – “In the Lord’s hands”].

Item of Thomas Smale for a parcel of land late Seyntcler and sometime Watkyn Smale lying next Wykman felde on the East – a halfpenny.

Item of the same Thomas Smale for a Tenement and a Garden called Holmes late Watkyn Smale lying to the King’s High Way on the East and the lands of the said Lord on the North, South and West – 13d., suit to Court and relief.

Item of the same Thomas Smale for a meadow containing 1½ acres at New Elme sometime Watkyn Smale to the ryn’ [sic] there on the North layd [sic] on the South and West – 3½d.

Item of John Beverege for an acre of land called Shortlands sometime Sampson Baker late Robert Gyles lying to the lands of the said John Stable of Crofton on the North and South part and the Waste lands called Bromhyll on the West and payeth by the year – 1¾d. [?]

Item of the same Beveredge for certain parcels of land called Robbery’s Lands containing 3 acres by estimation next the lands of Robert Stable called Grene Croft on the West part and one parcel of land called Outreds Land containing 3 acres by estimation next the lands of Edward Watton containing one acre by estimation called Godhethold lying next the Cross called Scaddcrosse on the North part And further one parcel of land called Toddhethe containing 3 acres by estimation lying to the King’s high Way on the East part and to the lands of Thomas Hadden gent. on the West part and payeth yearly as appeareth by a deed – 10s.10d. Item of Thomas Wryght for a Garden called Pratts Garden alias Burden hawe late William Wryght’s lying to the lands of Henry Posyer on the East part and next the lands of the said Thomas Wryght called Workman Felde on the South part and payeth – 6d.

Item of the same Thomas Wryght for a Garden lying next the Manor [sic] of the said Thomas Wryght on the North and West part and to the Orchard of the said Manor Orpington Mayfield on the South part and holdeth the same by Copy of Court Roll as it appeareth by the same Copy – 12d. Item of John Stable the younger, son of John Stable of Chayam [sic] for a croft of land called Four Acres lying in Orpington Mayfield to the lands of this Manor of the North and East parts and to the lands of the Savoy called Brodfelde of the West part – 10d.

Item in the Lord’s hands late Margaret Crosse and after John Serlys and Thomas Clerke the younger and the Tenement is called Annots with a garden thereto lying with divers other lands lying to the same tenement an payeth by the year – 22d., one hen, 10 eggs, suit to court and heriot of the which 22d., 9d. is in the Lord’s hand, and in John Beveredge’s hands other 9d., and the other 4d. Jane Clerke payeth [a note added – “paid Beverydge – 6d.”].
